11 January, 19

The month of December is always hectic for retailers with Christmas and the New Year standout events in the calendar. Peak season is never a surprise, and Wincanton once again worked for some household names to ensure people didn’t go without through the festive season.

The latest figures reveal that Wincanton enjoyed the most successful peak period in over ten years.

A snapshot of Wincanton’s activity across the UK during December 2018 reveals:

In Greater Manchester, Wincanton delivered over 35,000 bags of Christmas carrots
In and around central London, it delivered over 5.1 million bottled drinks, with Central London being the region with the highest number of deliveries made. This is the equivalent of over 424,000 deliveries per inner-London borough
In Cambridgeshire alone, the company made almost 10,000 trips to deliver nearly 9 million grocery items
In the Merseyside area, drivers stationed at the site in St Helens clocked up over 1.38 million kilometres on the road in December alone
In North Yorkshire, on Friday 21st December recorded the highest number of single day shipments, at over 300,000

Liam McElroy, Managing Director – Retail and Consumer Goods, Wincanton, said: “2018 was a phenomenal year for Wincanton and the Christmas period marked our most successful peak of the last 10 years. It is a testament to our dedicated drivers and amazing warehouse teams who all put the hard work in to make sure consumers across the UK get everything that they need for Christmas. By being able to deliver all around the country, either via traditional warehouse to store operation, or via our eFulfilment processes which deliver from store to home, this has been a performance which our colleagues can all be very proud of.”

In a single week leading up to Christmas 2018, latest figures reveal its drivers:

· Collected more than 15 million litres of milk

· Delivered over 130,000 pallets of Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) goods

· Delivered 3,200 shipping containers

· Delivered 75 million litres of fuel to forecourts around the UK

· Repaired over 3,630 trucks and delivery vehicles

Wincanton services a variety of sectors around the country, and markets from Grocery and Home & DIY to Construction and Defence, meaning there is resulting in a wealth of cross-sector knowledge to pull from in peak periods. The sheer scale of the network means Wincanton can draw upon its portfolio of drivers and assets to support customers experiencing planned peak activity or provide extra capacity to cope with unforeseen upticks in activity like summer heatwaves or challenging winters.
