Board24 has invested a substantial £11.1 million in a new corrugator and purpose built extension in Preston, Lancashire. The investment increases capacity of the existing plant and also demonstrates the company’s commitment to the ‘Northern Powerhouse’.

The development of the site was in response to ever-increasing customer demand for Board24’s corrugated sheetboard, a desire to improve productivity and the drive to use resources more efficiently.

Increased capacity at the plant has led to an improvement in lead times for customers and production efficiencies. Local residents have plenty to smile about too as increased production has already resulted in 25 new full time jobs with another 15 expected.

The corrugator is capable of producing a superior finish in all grades including clay coated liners to converters across the UK and Ireland. Board24’s customers typically supply firms who are looking for superior presentation, retail appeal and sustainability. The company’s ultimate beneficiaries encompass retail multiples, manufacturers and distributors. The environmentally sound and versatile product offering allows for the board to be widely used for packaging a range of products.

In order to future-proof their production facility, Board24 purchased a highly bespoke, BHS 400m/min volume corrugator, which works in parallel with the original corrugator. The BHS is 33% faster, produces smaller board sizes, offers increased choice and better quality from installing a zero defect and warp control system.

Board24’s sales and marketing director, Alex Morris, commented: “This investment is a huge benefit for everyone and ensures a reliable supply chain for box makers and the packaging industry into the future. Our customers can expect high standards in terms of product quality and choice in board grades to fit their requirement. In addition by creating new jobs and providing enhanced working conditions for our colleagues, we have further increased efficiency and maximised flexibility, thus supporting customers in meeting crucial deadlines.”

In keeping with the company’s serious environmental agenda and in conjunction with Natural England, the extended facility was constructed whilst translocating over 50 Great Crested Newts (a protected species) residing on the site since its start-up in 1995.

The firm remains committed to good environmental practice extending to the protection of its local environment and the world’s forests. Being FSC certified, Board24 offers its customers peace of mind that paper is purchased responsibly, with traceability from the forest through to the paper mill. The corrugated board produced by Board24 is over 90% recyclable, 90% biodegradable and now made from 90% recycled or recovered paper. Even the water used in the production process is recycled. Board24’s outcomes are proof that investing in production facilities can be compatible with delivering profitable business objectives whilst maintaining excellent environmental priorities.
