Completing Foundation Logistics For “Deutsche Bucht” Project In Cuxhaven.

14 January, 19

The offshore installation vessel, Seajacks “Scylla”, arrived at Cuxport Terminal on 30 December to pick up the final foundation structures for the Deutsche Bucht offshore wind farm. The world’s two largest installation vessels for offshore wind turbines, Seajacks “Scylla” and “Innovation”, both were frequent guests in Cuxhaven during 2018 thanks to two major offshore projects.

The “Innovation” used Cuxhaven as its base port for the installation of 20 suction bucket jacket foundations for the “Borkum Riffgrund 2” wind park starting in March 2018. The foundation structures, each 50 metres high and weighing 950 tonnes, were first partially assembled and stored at Cuxhaven and then installed about 40 kilometres north-west of the island of Borkum.

Balance of Plant contractor Van Oord used the Cuxport terminal for storage and transhipment of monopiles and transition pieces for Northland Power’s Deutsche Bucht offshore wind farm. The installation vessel, “Scylla”, regularly visited the new berth no. 4 at the Cuxport terminal from August 2018 onwards in order to take on board a total of 31 transition pieces, each weighing about 300 tonnes, and monopiles weighing around 1,100 tonnes. Van Oord successfully completed the installation of latter foundation structures earlier this week.

“We were repeatedly able to demonstrate in 2018 that Cuxhaven is ideally suited for the handling of offshore segments within Cuxport’s multi-purpose strategy. The opening of the new heavy-duty berth no. 4 at our terminal now provides additional space for extending our activities also in this segment,” says Roland Schneider, Head of Business Development at Cuxport.

Cuxport not only provided intermediate storage space for heavy-duty foundations during 2018, but also support for the operation of several offshore platforms in the form of port logistics and supply services like container stuffing/stripping, customs administration and waste disposal. The supply items included food, tools and consumables for people living and working on the offshore platforms. Supply vessels, so-called SOVs (Service Operation Vessels), regularly travel to the wind parks in the North Sea from the port of Cuxhaven.
