HFW Expands Singapore Shipping Practice With Hire Of Christopher Jones.

31 July, 19

Global, sector-focused law firm HFW has hired Christopher Jones, a renowned former shipbroker with almost 50 years’ experience in the shipping industry.

Chris will join the firm on 1 August as a Consultant in our Singapore office’s Shipping practice. Chris’s hire continues sustained expansion and diversification for HFW’s Shipping team in the APAC region, with the hire of Ship Finance Partner Siri Wennevik and the 2017 relocations of Toby Stephens and John Forrester from our London office.

HFW now has a specialist shipping team of 10 lawyers in Singapore, including three Partners and two Master Mariners, and additional lawyers whose practices encompass shipping.

Toby Stephens, Singapore Head of Shipping and APAC Head of Admiralty and Crisis Management, HFW:

“Based in Singapore since 1982, Chris has a wealth of experience in the shipping industry and Asia. He is one of the leading figures in the Singapore shipping community.

Our Singapore office handles, on average, 200-250 ship closings a year; Chris’s experience will further strengthen our dedicated offering in this space.

His expertise on past and current freight rates, and his ability to undertake valuation work, will also prove valuable to our client base.”

Paul Dean, Global Head of Shipping, HFW:

“I am delighted to welcome Chris to our world-leading shipping practice. We pride ourselves on our industry expertise, global coverage and truly full-spectrum service. Chris’s arrival demonstrates our continuing commitment to strengthening our international capabilities in all aspects of the maritime sector.”

Chris Jones, Consultant, HFW:

“Since I retired in February, I have really missed the shipping industry – a little to my surprise, as I had been eagerly anticipating frequent holidays and regular rounds of golf! I am therefore truly delighted to begin working with such a prestigious firm as HFW. I am very much looking forward to continuing to play a part in this fascinating sector that has been such a large part of my life for so long.”

Chris’s arrival follows HFW’s recent promotion of four new shipping partners and three shipping legal directors – the largest annual promotion of senior shipping lawyers in the firm’s 136-year history.

HFW’s global shipping group now has 62 partners and more than 190 lawyers across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific, making it the largest specialist shipping practice of any law firm.

The team advise clients across the industry on the full range of shipping and maritime issues, including dry shipping, admiralty and crisis management, and transactional work.
