The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) will challenge the shipping industry and policymakers to face the reality of powering global trade without the use of fossil fuels in its 2019 International Shipping Conference Setting Course for 2050: Powering Global Trade.

Taking place at the British Library on Wednesday 11 September 2019, during London International Shipping Week, the conference will bring together leading scientists, economists, oil & gas industry players, financiers, infrastructure and shipping leaders along with ministers and policymakers. Guy Platten, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping said “We are bringing together a stellar line up to shine a light on the drivers that are shaping the global business agenda and to identify pathways for an equitable transition in the shipping industry and its value chain. This important event will welcome speakers at the cutting edge of industry, policy and thought leadership to engage with the shipping industry in what will be a unique forum for those seeking to shape the future of shipping.”

The first ten speakers announced today are:

Setting Course for 2050: Powering Global Trade will examine the challenges facing the maritime world as it prepares for the 4th Propulsion Revolution. The flagship conference will discuss the critical drivers that will impact industry and identify the solutions needed to set a course for 2050.

Sessions will include: Climate Change and the Shipping Sector; The Economics of Change; Fuel in Transition; and Building Capacity and Resilience.

Zoe Knight, HSBC, chairing the panel discussion The New Financing Realities, emphasises the importance of the event. “The drivers of global finance are changing and this will impact all sectors. The maritime sector is a vital sector for global trade but also for limiting climate change. Significant improvements in energy efficiency of vessels and the use of low-carbon fuels are transformations that would align shipping with the Paris Agreement goals and the finance sector can help by working closely with companies to support their climate ambition”
