IHATEC Status Conference: DAKOSY Presents Blockchain Technology ROboB And Cloud Platform EMP 4.0.

18 September, 19

The status conference of the “Innovative Port Technologies” (IHATEC) funding program is taking place today at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) in Berlin. The participants will present the current status of the projects being funded. As a part of the program, DAKOSY has been developing the Export Management Platform EMP 4.0 as well as the blockchain-based container release software ROboB.

“The port environment is in a constant state of change, not least because of the increase in the global flow of goods. With ROboB and EMP 4.0, we are working on two innovative research projects that will take the port industry further into the digital age and meet the challenges of the future. Together with our partners we are pioneering important work, including the testing of the new technologies for their practical suitability,”

said DAKOSY CEO Dieter Spark in reference to the status conference.

With the IHATEC funding program, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) supports research and development projects that contribute to the development or adaptation of innovative technologies in German sea and inland ports. The BMVI is making approximately 64 million euros available for this purpose for the period 2016-2021.

ROboB – blockchain for release orders in the import process

With ROboB – Release Order based on Blockchain – the process of container release in the port of Hamburg takes advantage of blockchain technology. The Release Order, which is exchanged between the parties involved during sea freight import, allows a transport company to pick up a container from the terminal. The high value of goods transported in a container demands strict requirements for access authorization and the security of the IT process. By using blockchain technology, information about the release can be stored decentralized and safe from alteration.

“The enormous advantages of this technology can only fully be exploited when all parties involved in the process have the ability to use the blockchain. We’re working on driving the integration and inclusion of all stakeholders, for example by providing ROboB as a simple SaaS solution,”

explains Evelyn Eggers, Head of Business Development at DAKOSY and Project Manager for ROboB.

Beginning in the fourth quarter of 2019, ROboB will be tested as a pilot project in the Port of Hamburg. DAKOSY’s project partner is the Institute of Business Logistics and General Management at the Technical University of Hamburg. The project executing agency is TÜV Rheinland Consulting GmbH.

EMP 4.0 – cloud-based platform for more efficiency in the port

EMP 4.0 is an internet-based cloud solution for the holistic, digitized and integrated handling of export processes. By linking all process participants along the transport chain, existing local platforms and applications as well as numerous bilateral coordination processes are bundled into a single system.

The transparent availability of all transport-related data and its permanent accessibility at a central location for all parties involved in the process enables a high degree of planning security as well as more efficient transport processing, making it faster and more cost-effective. EMP 4.0 covers 14 different use cases along the complete transport chain. For example, with EMP 4.0, current position data is automatically provided via Track & Trace, which leads to better planning of handling processes. In order to avoid waiting times when a container is picked up at the empty container depot, the release reference can be verified in advance using the Empty Release Function. EMP 4.0 also enables standardized transmission of dangerous goods data (DG registration) and plausibility checks with interfaces to multiple port systems. The required documents can be stored in the Doc Cloud of EMP 4.0.

In addition to DAKOSY as IT expert and project coordinator, Kühne + Nagel and DB Cargo, two major players from the export business, are project partners. TÜV Rheinland Consulting GmbH is the project executing agency here as well. In addition, other well-known participants, including shipping companies, forwarders, terminals and intermodal operators, are involved in the development as associated partners. The functions of EMP 4.0 will be evaluated by the project partners between May 2020 and March 2021 as part of the pilot operation.

“Together with our project partners, we are counting on significantly improved transparency and more efficient resolution of disruptions, which will already be viable in the pilot phase,” says Malte Kantak, project manager at DAKOSY. “After the pilot phase is completed, DAKOSY will continue to operate the EMP 4.0 platform and in the coming years the platform will be continually expanded to enable users an even broader saturation in export processes,”

Kantak continues.
