The Port of Tyne is leading innovation across the maritime and logistics sector, since launching the UK’s first Maritime 2050 Innovation Hub it has been seeking new and collaborative ways to meet the challenges facing the blue economy.

In November in a maritime first, the 2050 Innovation Hub hosted its first hackathon event, which saw teams competing to win prize funding to develop technology that enables autonomous solutions across the spectrum of maritime logistics.

Teams from companies including Accenture, City Web, Frazer-Nash Consultancy, Newcastle University, Northumbrian Water and Royal Haskoning DHV joined the hackathon and contributed to building innovative technology that improves berth utilisation.

Francis Harkin, Senior Consultant at Frazer-Nash Consultancy, said:

“The hackathon was a fantastic learning experience and well worth taking part in. We’re really looking forward to the upcoming Innovation Live! event and continuing to develop new ideas that push the boundaries of digital technology within the field of supply chain logistics.”

Following the successful one day hackathon event, the 2050 Innovation Hub is gearing up to its Innovation Live! Showcase event, and everyone with an interest in developing digital solutions within transport, logistics or technology is welcome to take part.

The Innovation Live! Event will take place on Tuesday 17th December at the Port of Tyne near Newcastle upon Tyne, teams or individuals will compete to pitch tech solutions or even just a concept to a panel of experts, with the chance of winning prize funding if the panel judge their idea to have the ability to advance maritime technology.

The expert panel consists of Matt Beeton Port of Tyne CEO, Frans Calje CEO PD Ports, Helen Baker Managing Director Accenture and Raoul Tan Business Manager Digital Development Port of Rotterdam.

Ian Blake Port of Tyne, Head of IT, said:

“We’re developing a network of interested parties who are passionate about collaborating to advance technology, and even if you don’t want to pitch your ideas, we’re throwing open the doors to students, coders, developers, academics, and supply chain professionals – they’re all invited to take part.

“Our Innovation Live! event is a great opportunity to network with other innovative people and organisations and hear from industry thought leaders, plus, we’re offering the opportunity for organisations who want to showcase digital products and services to exhibit at our mini-expo and even join us online as we’ll be live streaming the whole event.”

Companies, start-ups, individuals, and students interested in AI, machine learning, crypto, security and block chain – to name just a few advanced technologies are encouraged to sign up and register for more information.

If you’re interested in learning more, head over to the Port of Tyne’s website for full terms and conditions or email [email protected], it’s entirely free to take part.
