29 April, 19

Thought leaders from the world of UK and international government, finance, trade and ship owning will be among speakers at the London International Shipping Week 2019 (LISW19) headline conference to be held at the Grosvenor House Hotel on London’s Park Lane, on Thursday 12th September.

Paddy Rodgers, past-CEO of Euronav and current Director and Chairman of the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Fund, will moderate the day-long conference, which will have International Trade in a Changing World as its central theme.

Drawing on the sub-themes of Growing, Innovating and Partnering, the LISW19 conference will consider global issues including geopolitical conflict, global economic pressures, protectionism, technology, regulation, environment and even Brexit. Issues that may, or may not, impact the global maritime industry.

Following a welcome address from Harry Theochari, Chair, Maritime UK, Kitack Lim, IMO Secretary General, will discuss preparations for the global sulphur cap coming into force on 1 January 2020. A senior UK Government Minister will also deliver a keynote address.

The opening session entitled Trade – Growing New Markets, New Business – will ask the question: do the current trade tensions between the US, China and Europe signal the end of the rules-based liberal economic order? Is there an inherent tension between globalisation and inequality?

This session will analyse the status of global trade, its potential changes, whether rhetoric matches the reality and what challenges and opportunities will exist for global shipping.

The issues of Innovation & Sustainability will be tackled head on in the second session. It is known that shipping is changing fast and the moral and regulatory imperatives protecting the environment in which global shipping operates, will have an unprecedented effect on how global trade is propelled.

But how will shipping adapt against this ever-evolving backdrop? Key industry figures like Sarah Kenny, Chief Executive of BMT and Bud Darr, EVP of Maritime & Policy, MSC Group will talk on the issues.

One of the highlights of the day will be the Innovation in Trade & Shipping Finance session which will ask: in a world where markets are being influenced by technology and climate change, and where trading patterns are changing in line with consumer demand, funding models for shipping must also innovate. Where is this new funding coming from and how easy is it to access?
This session will review how shipping can finance sustainable growth in this rapidly changing world.

The LISW19 conference will be followed on the Thursday evening by the official LISW19 Gala Dinner, also to be held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.

Taking place from September 9 to 13, LISW19 will be the must-attend event of the global maritime calendar with more than 200 industry functions and unique networking opportunities. The events will be organised either by the industry at large through the various LISW19 Supporting Organisations or by Sponsoring Companies of LISW19.
