Make Smart Motorways Safer, Urges RHA.

28 October, 19

Better refuge areas and clearer signage would make smart motorways safer, says the Road Haulage Association.

The recommendations are two measures the Association says the Government must adopt amid concerns about safety on the network.

RHA chief executive, Richard Burnett says that smart motorways have improved journey times but concerns linger about confusing signage and inadequate refuge areas.

“Motorways are still our safest roads and we want to keep them that way, but smart motorways are not as safe and reliable as they should be.

“We need larger and more frequent refuge areas on the network and better use of signage to ensure drivers understand when hard shoulders are closed to active running.”

The RHA’s recommendations come as transport secretary, Grant Shapps announced a review into the safety of smart motorways.
