MCTC upgrades training course with Steamship Mutual.

Leading maritime training provider Marine Catering Training Consultancy (MCTC) has launched its upgraded training course in association with International Group P&I Club Steamship Mutual.

MCTC has been working closely with Steamship Mutual to upgrade its 10-week Safe Food Handling & Nutrition – Support & Consultancy computer-based distance coaching course.

This is a training course MCTC provides to kitchen staff onboard its clients’ vessels, which enables catering staff to improve their knowledge through five theoretical modules, which is backed up with support and consultancy from a team of personal culinary consultants.

The course covers important topics related to the daily duties of the cook, which includes the safe handling of food, nutritional knowledge, menu planning and food optimisation. It also includes provision for a practical evaluation which enables the trainees to demonstrate their skills in a practical manner. The practical assessment takes place once a week where the trainee creates a menu to be cooked for the crew that day. The menu and cooking is then evaluated by the Master, and the report is reviewed by an MCTC expert consultant.

Managing Director of MCTC, Christian Ioannou said: “We’re really excited to have embarked on this relationship with Steamship Mutual. We have been working very closely with Steamship on upgrading our training course to ensure our trainees are equipped with a high standard of knowledge of good nutrition and the safe handling of food items. The knowledge and skills set of the catering crews is absolutely vital in the health and wellbeing of seafarers.”

Chris Adams, Director, Head of European Syndicate and Loss Prevention for Steamship Mutual said: “The health and well-being of seafarers is vitally important to safe shipping operations. This training course from MCTC will make an extremely valuable contribution to that objective, and we are delighted to have had the opportunity to participate in the development of the course.”
