More than able with cable

Britain’s oldest and largest specialised cable supplier is marking a milestone of 15 years of connection with logistics company ELB Partners.

From short-length domestic wiring to miles of deep-sea industrial oil, gas and petrochemical connectivity, Batt Cables plc, the UK’s premier supplier of specialised cabling, requires an end-to-end quality logistics solution that ensures products reach its customers in pristine condition.

With a stock portfolio including fibre-optic and data carrying cabling and accessories, Batt Cables plc, which is also the oldest cable supplier in Britain, has delivered excellence in connectivity to niche industries all over the world since 1952.

Using its own fleets for specialised haulage, the business based in Erith, north Kent, required a collaborative logistics supplier to plug some of its shorter haul requirements across the UK and turned to London-based ELB Partners.

“Batt Cables has a diverse stocking profile which includes a £55m ($88m, €66m) inventory, including fibre optics, 33kv power cable, mic cable, data and CWZ fire performance cables, together with related products and accessories,’’ said Gary Heuerman, transport manager at Batt Cables plc.

“It is our number one priority to arrive in pristine condition in order to perform the task it is manufactured for so we needed a partnership that understood that exacting requirement.

“ELB has grown with our business because it is proactive. We know through their proof of delivery technology when payloads reach their destination, which is so important to us.

“And, if there is a problem, ELB have usually sorted it by the time we get to know about it – this is a relationship built on collaboration and trust.”

The privately-owned Batt Cables plc distributes its specialised payload via overnight pallets in weight consignments and ELB Partners is retained to deliver between the parameters of 125 kilos and one tonne of cable all over the UK.

What began life as 10 pallets has stretched to three digits per night for ELB Partners, which is part of the Pallet-Track network.

Peter Eason, managing director of Wimbledon-based ELB Partners, said:

“This is a great example of long-term collaborative partnership. Our staff know it’s based upon trust and good communication because of the time and quality-critical nature of the products – if they have an issue, we are on it straight away.”

Batt Cables, which employs 200 people across eight stock locations, has 20 sales offices around the world.
