New Shipping Rules Bring Fresh Opportunities, Experts Say.

During the 2nd Green Maritime Forum in Hamburg, organised by Wisdom Events, high-level speakers delved into the topics of green shipping & IMO regulations. The event was led by the brilliant Chairwoman of the Forum Barbara Jinks, Director Government Relations of Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE), and sponsored by Taronis Technologies, Port of Helsinki. CEPT Group, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs & Minerva Marine.

The presentations and discussions showed that the upcoming sulphur cap regulations by the IMO can cause certain challenges as outlined by speakers Budd Darr (MSC Group) and Minas Miliaras (Carnival Maritime) in their presentations about diversified regulatory challenges and those in the cruise industry respectively. However, based on the talk by Eva Dai (Zhejiang CEPT) regulations are not punishments as overcoming them inspires the industry to be more creative.

Looking for compliant solutions allows shipowners to explore new ways of powering marine vessels. For example, Sören Berg (MARIKO GmbH) talked about hydrogen applications in the Port of Emden, while Christopher Fee (Oldendorff Carriers) shared how scrubbers can improve local air quality and Rony Tawk (ENGIE) presented approaches to the management of LNG as a marine fuel.

The changing regulatory environment also encourages governments & associations to take action as presented by Christopher Stanik from NOW National Organisation Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology who talked about the German government’s funding programme for LNG as a ship fuel and Sandro Vidas, Director of Croatian Shipowners Association Mare Nostrum, who revealed the important role of shipowners’ associations in the fight to decrease CO2 emissions.

There is still a lot of work left to do and subjects to cover in order to reach the goal of a greener shipping industry. Luckily, Wisdom Events offers another opportunity for discussions & networking at the 4th International Green & Smart Shipping Summit in Rotterdam on 8-9 October.
