A Suffolk freight forwarder has been named one of 33 finalists in the 2019 Freight Service Awards run by the British International Freight Association (BIFA).

Morrison Freight has been shortlisted in the Staff Development category, while 24-year-old former apprentice Jamie Abbott, is up for the Young Freight Forwarder award.

In response to the news, Jamie Abbott said:

“Since joining Morrison Freight as an apprentice five years ago, I have successfully developed in my role as a forwarder, learnt new skills and gained industry recognised qualifications.

“The business has allowed me to develop my career and in three years I became an account manager, jointly managing the company’s export division.

“I am delighted to be recognised, not only by my company but also by BIFA and named as a finalist in this category.”

Since Darren Ryan and Lee Steward took over the business four years ago, they have invested a great deal in staff development. The skills of the staff have been bolstered by external training in customer service, sales and marketing, and customs formalities and procedures.

They have also invested in their own training and have monthly sessions with a business coach. Earlier this year, both directors completed a Business Growth Programme with Cranfield University.

Darren said:

“Being named a finalist in the staff development award is a great accolade for us.

“We invest in our staff and many of our employees have been put through various training programmes to enhance their skills.

“In fact, all employees have undertaken industry specific courses including the BIFA led export and import training.

“What’s more, six members of staff have completed NVQs in business techniques led by the College of West Anglia, and a further six members of staff have completed Hazardous Cargo Awareness training.

Lee added: “As an employer we relish the opportunity to recruit someone early in their career and give them the tools to flourish.

“Jamie is a fine example of this and we are very proud to see that BIFA has recognised not only his progress to date, but his talent and potential for the future.”

The awards ceremony is taking place on Thursday 16th January 2020 at The Brewery in London. The ceremony will be hosted by Paralympian and broadcaster, Ade Adepitan.
